Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy pools are used by vulnerable people therefore must be safe and accessible. All pools need accessible changing facilities for able-bodied and disabled children. The edge of the pool should be in a contrast colour to the pool water and provide sufficient space (2-2.5 m wide) for the circulation of mobile lifts and wheelchairs. A ceiling lift is recommended for support, gait training, hydrotherapeutic activities, and for transfers into and out of the pool. For health and safety reasons all ceiling lift installations should be easily visible and/or accessible for regular inspections. In general the following design guidelines should be followed:

  • Sufficient space for both supervision and circulation of children and responsible adults
  • Easily accessible alarm system and life-saving equipment
  • Clear view at all times for supervision and safety
