Toilet and changing rooms

There should be sufficient toilets and changing facilities for both staff and students. Requirements for these facilities differ however should take into account access for wheelchairs and other mobility aids as well as male to female ratio. The following key design points should be taken into account:

  • Sufficient room for non-ambulant children to move around and at least two staff per child using wheelchair. Space is also needed for all manual handling and transfer needs including use of mobile lifts and storage for this equipment when not in use
  • Robust fixtures and fittings should be at an appropriate height for wheelchair users (either adjustable height or fixed height but with space for knees)
  • Both layout and fixtures and fittings should be age appropriate encouraging the development of personal care skills
  • Partitions should allow for supervision while preserving children’s privacy
  • Particular attention should be paid to children with motor disabilities by using fittings with either infra-red or long lever handles to encourage use bearing in mind both dexterity and reach
  • Adequate alarms should be positioned within easy reach of children, providing sufficient coverage of the area
  • For older children changing facilities including showers need to be provided
  • All showers should have centrally controlled thermostatic water with controls that cannot be interfered with by children
  • Allowance should be made in general changing facilities for access by wheelchair users including sufficient circulation space
  • Changing rooms designed specifically for children requiring a large degree of assistance should have a wheelchair accessible shower and/or shower trolley as well as a height adjustable changing bed. In addition there should be a peninsular toilet and an accessible wash hand basin
