Double, multiple bedroom design

Like single room design, double or multiple bedroom design should also take into consideration resident care flow as well as visitors interaction points. One of the biggest challenges faced by architects and designers is the need to combine resident privacy curtains with ceiling lift systems. This section provides guidance on spatial requirements for the 5 main areas related to patient handling. The 5 areas are resident, clinical, hygiene, family and mobilization zones. In every area you need to take into account people using the space, equipment and furniture and tasks that will be undertaken in the room.

The design of a room in an aged care facility has a significant impact on the health and safety of both resident and caregiver. Selecting the right equipment and room layout is fundamental to reduce the risk of resident and caregiver injury. It is essential to consider the following five zones in the design of the room:

  • Resident Zone – should be the focus of the room and include the bed, bedside cabinet, resident chair and lifting equipment. This is a high risk area at care facilities and should be designed to minimise the risk of resident falls
  • Clinical Zone – this includes all areas in the room to which the caregiver needs access for the clinical care of the resident, e.g. panels above the bed for medical outlets and an area where medications can be prepared. It is essential that this area remains obstacle free and facilitates easy access to the resident from the entrance of the room.
  • Hygiene – it is mandatory that this zone is located as far away from the bed as possible to minimise the risk of infections
  • Family Zone – this area should promote comfort and care with family and visitors without interfering in care activities
  • Mobilisation – there are specific spatial requirements for safe patient handling depending on the type of lift used. All furniture and equipment in this area needs to be easily movable.
